the Potomac Pedalers Touring Club of Washington, DC, proudly presents the Back Roads Century on Sunday, September 18, 2011 in the Shenandoah ValleyCome join us for one of the most beautiful rides in America. Each fall, cycling enthusiasts gather for this scenic ride, just west of Washington, DC. The Virginia countryside is an ideal setting for riding, with gently rolling hills, historic landmarks and fun!  We'll have rides of 25, 30, 50, 65 and 100 miles.

The Back Roads Century offers rides for all ability levels with distances of 25, 30, 50, 65 and 100 miles. It’s a fully supported event with rest stops providing food, water and facilities along each course. There’s also mechanical support during your ride.

The Back Roads Century travels through several small towns and villages that helped shape our nation’s history. We start in Berryville, VA, a colonial crossroads settlement; you’ll pass through the historic towns of Middleway and White Post; and one of our rest stops is at the Burwell-Morgan Mill, established in 1785. Another popular destination during our ride, is White Post Restorations, one of the premier antique car restoration facilities in the country. Plus, this is where we serve our “world famous” tomato sandwiches, freshly made under a shady oak tree; for you to relax and enjoy before completing your ride.

Food and Fun - Our event isn’t just about cycling, it’s also about fun. After you conclude your ride, we’ll have a cookout with home-made barbecue, hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs and other treats – this is included with your registration fee! You’ll receive a long sleeve Back Roads Century logo t-shirt, that’s free for anyone who registers by August 31st. It’s perfect for cool fall weather. There will be a Back Roads Century store, where you can purchase logo merchandise to remember and celebrate your ride. Local area bike shops will have the latest accessories and gear available for sale.  To relax and revitalize after the ride, we’ll have a massage therapist available for hire.

So if you’re looking for a challenging, rewarding and fun way to spend a beautiful fall day, be sure to attend the Back Roads Century. We’d love to see you there.
