The Washington Area Bicyclist Association, strives to create a healthy, more livable region by promoting bicycling for fun, fitness, and affordable transportation; advocating for better bicycling conditions and transportation choices for a healthier environment; and educating children, adults, and motorists about safe bicycling.
WABA works with State, Federal and local government agencies to ensure that cyclists best interests are fully represented, and monies are budgeted for cycling lanes, trails and transportation. Below are some of the current initiatives that they're engaged with:

- Construction of the Metropolitan Branch Trail and Anacostia Trail
- Increase miles of bike lanes striped across region

- Protect the Custis Trail from the widening of I-66
- Ensure a bike-friendly transportation center in Silver Spring
- Improve training of police officers and bus drivers
