What is Sports Massage?
Sports massage is designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery. There are three contexts in which sports massage can be useful to an athlete: pre-event, post-event, and injury treatment. For the non injured athlete recovery is critical to performance.
Benefits of Sports Massage
Sports massage utilizes specific massage techniques to assist athletes during performance, both in training and in competition. Benefits include:
- Decreased muscle soreness
- Reduced risk of injury
- Improved muscle tone
- Improved joint flexibility
- Enhanced performance
- Improves recovery time between workouts
Types of Sports Massage
- Pre-Event Massage:
- Warms up muscles and tendons through the use of invigorating techniques in preparation for intensive use. Ideally used immediately prior to starting the event, pre-event work also gives athletes the chance to prepare mentally for maximal performance. A typical session is 10 to 15 minutes duration.
- Post-Event Massage:
- After cooling down, post-event massage helps to relax tight muscles, relieve cramping and reduce recovery time. Decreased muscle soreness is an added benefit! A 15 to 30 minute session is typical.
- Injury Recovery:
- Finding a Certified Massage Therapist who has treated your condition before is most useful. Sports massage effectively treats conditions such as Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Faciaitis, knee pain, IT band syndrome, hip pain, sciatica, low back pain, compartment syndrome, rotator cuff injury, neck pain and more.
- Training /Recovery/Injury prevention Massage:
- Used regularly during training, sports conditioning massage can improve flexibility as well as take care of muscle problems before they impair performance. Sports massage can help to prevent injury and reduce recovery time from many sports related injuries.
